"When the back is tight and not
swinging, each stride causes an unpleasant
sensation in the bones and joints of the horse. Therefore, it alternates the supporting legs as quickly as possible by shortening the strides or jumps as compared to the natural, comfortable gait that is not impaired by pain. Consequently, the redoubled number of strides and jumps that are necessary to cover the same distance cause premature unsoundness, apart from the fact that joints which do not alternate supply enough in flexion and extension suffer damage from prolonged stiffness in inelastic gaits."
